Aims and Objectives: Diabetes is a chronic health condition proving to be a major health challenge globally. Being a lifestyle-related disorder, psychosocial and behavioral factors are critical for its management, among which stress plays a contributory role. Diabetes is associated with increased risk of depression, anxiety, and stress due to its debilitating nature and complications. Stress not only affects glycemic control through biological pathways but also leads to unhealthy behavior such as binge eating, smoking, and alcohol. This study attempts to fill the lacuna between clinical and psychosocial aspects of stress and thereby determines the prevalence and impact of stress among type 2 diabetes individuals in a clinic population. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional, case–control study that includes individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) as well as those with normal glucose tolerance. Assessment of stress was done using a validated tool, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (stress component). Sociodemographic characteristics, anthropometry, blood pressure, and biochemical parameters were collected in all the participants. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences statistical software. Results: The prevalence of stress was significantly higher in T2DM compared to normal glucose tolerance (NGT; 43% vs 13%, P < .001). Both among T2DM and NGT, stress levels were higher in younger individuals with higher education, higher income levels, and professionals. Stress scores decreased with age at diagnosis of T2DM (16.6 [≤25 years] vs 15.6 [≥26–40 years] vs 12.7 [≥41 years], P < .001). T2DM was significantly associated with stress after adjusting for confounding factors. Conclusion: Individuals with T2DM had significantly higher prevalence of stress. Regular screening of stress could lead to better glycemic control.

Eragrostiella bifaria var. secunda is reported here for the first time from India. A detailed description, distribution map and photographs are provided for identification. Caryopsis micromorphology of all the varieties of Eragrostiella bifaria is also provided for comparison. We also proposed the lectotypification of Eragrostiella brachyphylla.

Tripogon idukkianus, a new species of grass from the Ramakkalmedu hill slopes of Idukki district of Kerala, South India is described and illustrated. The new species differs from T. anantaswamianus in having 5-13 mm long, acuminate glabrous leaves, 6-14 flowered spikelets with secund florets, 4-lobed scabrid lemmas with 3 awns each, and 2-keeled ciliate paleas with an obtuse or acute apex with two subapical setae.

Twenty six species, one additional subspecies and one additional cultivar of the genus Pteris occurring in South India are treated, of which 4 taxa are cultivated or locally adventive exotics. Their descriptions, a key to the species, their reported chromosome numbers, taxonomic comments and colour photographs are provided. Of these, P. reptans T.G.Walker had not been recorded before in India until the report by Sreenivas (2011 ined.) and P. arisanensis Tagawa and P. perrottetii Hieron. had not previously been reported from Kerala state. Comments are made concerning some of the taxonomically confused species and the conservation status of the species is listed.

In South India, pteridophytes are adapted to almost all ecosystems and micro habitats to represent all ecological types such as hydrophytes, xerophytes, sciophytes, rheophytes, etc., except parasites and marine plants. Many species are located in highaltitudes above 700m and few only above 900m. They include the small aquatic mosquito ferns (Azolla pinnata R.Br.) and the arborescent tree ferns like Cyathea crinita. Salvinia molesta Mitch, is a notorious aquatic weed and Azolla spp. is an effective biofertilizer in paddy fields. Being sensitive to ecological perturbations, many species have become endangered or extinct from their original habitat. Unless effective and inmjediate conservation steps are being taken, many Pteridophyte species will soondisappear from this area.

This article aims to study the publishing trends in South India, including the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka. It also gives an insight into the markets in South India for English and Regional language books. As many international publishers are moving towards the Indian book market, it is necessary to understand the culture and diversities of the country which prove to be the biggest hurdle in marketing and promotion. This article gives detailed information on General trade, Academic and School book markets. It also lists the key distributors, retailers and publishers in South India. The last page of the article details the entry barriers for international publishers and proven techniques adopted by other publishers. Partnership with Indian companies has worked well for many international publishers. All the statistics and data have been collected and referenced to the best knowledge of the author.

Impact of biotic disturbances on the Nilgiri langur (Trachypithecus johnii) habitat, demography and group dynamics was investigated from 1985 to 1988, Wood cutting, dynamiting and pilgrimage were the disturbances. Based on the intensity of disturbances the Nilgiri langur habitat was subjectively differentiated into highly disturbed (HD), moderately disturbed (MD) and least disturbed (LD) areas. Ten groups of langur were selected: four in the HD areas and three each in the MD and LD areas. These groups were monitored to collect data on group size, composition and birth and death rates. There was loss of trees, Doles and canopy col er due to firewood cutting and pilgrimage to Sorimuthayanar temple. Most of the trees cut were Nilgiri langur food plants. Dynamiting near Servalar reservoir destroyed 103 trees belonging to 10 species in a sample area of 1.2 ha. All ten species were Nilgiri langur food plants. Disturbances decreased birth rate and increased death rate, Increase in mean group size seen in the LD area was not seen in other two areas. Several conservation problems are identified and management recommendations for protection, restoration and education are given.

Aim: To evaluate cephalometric parameters of orthodontic population in an urban setup in Odisha using Steiner’s, Tweed’s and Rakosi’s analysis and compare it with the established Caucasian norms. Methodology: Pre?treatment patient records from a dental hospital were collected. Lateral cephalograms of the normal and supernormal sample were traced. Cephalometric features relating to various facial hard tissue that determine balance and harmony were measured using Steiner’s, Tweed’s and Rakosi’s analysis. The values obtained were compared with the established Caucasian norms. Comparison of mean values were done via independent sample t test and ANOVA. Subsequently post hoc Tukey’s was used to establish the significance of the mean difference of all the variables used. Results: Significant differences were obtained for lower incisor to NB, mandibular plane angle, FMA, FMIA, articular angle, basal plane angle, inclination angle, Rakosi Jarabak ratio and interincisal angle. Conclusion: Fundamental variations were seen in various parameters. Perception of lay persons can be of aid to the clinician in assembling commendations for alternative treatment plans.

Background: Infective endocarditis (IE) is an infection of the endocardial surface of the heart. Despite recent advances in diagnosis and treatment, mortality rates remain high. Data on the prevalence, epidemiology and etiology of IE from India are sparse. Aims and Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical, laboratory, microbiological, and echocardiographic characteristics of IE patients in Chennai, south India. Materials and Methods: Patients were classified based on modified Duke criteria. Details of the clinical profile of the patients and laboratory data were recorded. Blood cultures were performed to establish the etiology. Results: Ninety six percent of patients had native valve endocarditis. Mitral valve was the most commonly affected valve. Conclusion: Rheumatic heart disease was the most common predisposing factor and fever was the most common clinical feature. Viridans group streptococci accounted of the culture positive cases.
